Summer is finally here. So, how should you set your thermostat to keep your house cool and not over use energy? A digital programmable thermostat that is set properly is very helpful to get you through the summer with energy and money savings. Programming your thermostat to automatically reset the temperature during your sleeping and working hours is best. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (typically, six or more temperature settings a day) that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program.

How to Properly Operate Your Thermostat

During the warm summer months, you can save money and energy by keeping your central air conditioning setting warmer than normal when you are away, and setting the thermostat to the desired temperature only when you are at home and need cooling. You will also see a difference in energy usage if you set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible. Keep in mind, the smaller the difference between your indoor temperature and the outdoor temperature, the lower your overall cooling expense will be.

Did you know that you use three to five percent more energy for each degree that your air conditioner is set below 24 degrees Celsius or 75 degrees Fahrenheit? So, set your thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius or 77 degrees Fahrenheit to provide the most comfort at the least cost. Here is something else you may not know…Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you first turn on it on. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.

What About Opening the Windows?

Opening windows in the summer costs nothing, and it can save a lot of energy and money. If outdoor temperatures permit, consider keeping your windows open in the evening and overnight, but don’t forget to turn off your air conditioning. In the summer, it is usually most ideal to close the windows during the day to keep the cool air in and the warm air out.
